Youth Orchestra season finale welcomes violinist Chee-Yun

Youth Orchestra season finale welcomes violinist Chee-Yun

The Mobile Symphony Youth Orchestra (MSYO) will be joined by violinist Chee-Yun for the season finale concert.  “Compelling, Charming, Charismatic – Chee-Yun”, May 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Saenger Theatre.

“This has been an extraordinary year with the Mobile Symphony Youth Orchestra,” Dr. Robert Seebacher, MSYO music director said. “The season finale will showcase all that the ensemble has accomplished in just a few short months, including Vasili Kalinnikov’s Symphony No. 1 on the first half of the program.”

In keeping with its mission to create a unique experience for the young musicians, the MSYO regularly works with world-renowned guest artists, and this year is no exception.

“We are so pleased and privileged to share the stage with violinist Chee-Yun,” Seebacher, now in his seventh year as MSYO music director, said. “”She is an artist of extraordinary skill, and has performed with many of the world’s greatest orchestras, including those in Philadelphia, London, Toronto, Houston, Pittsburgh, Seattle, and Washington D.C.”

The MSYO will perform Lalo’s “Symphonie Espagnole” with Chee-Yun on the second half of the concert, creating, as Seebacher said, “ . . . an exciting finale. A great group of musicians, a Russian Symphony and the radiant and charismatic Chee-Yun!”

Chee-Yun was the recipient of an Avery Fisher Career grant. She is regularly in demand as a recital musician and recording artist and is Artist-in-Residence at Southern Methodist University in Dallas where she teaches violin.

“As an enthusiastic and dedicated music educator, Chee-yun regularly offers master classes such as the one she will give with the MSYO musicians,” Seebacher said. “All of these experiences make her an authority on violin performance and orchestral performance. This is precisely why I am so excited to have her work with the MSYO and why it is such a unique privilege to share the stage with her for our finale.”

According to Seebacher, the end of the 14-15 season marks the time when he, as music director, begins looking at next year’s orchestra. Any instrumentalists in middle school or high school are eligible to audition for the MSYO. Audition information will be posted on www.mobilesymphony.org by the end of May.

“I’d love to see any young musician, that would like to a part of the MSYO, audition for us in August,” Seebacher said. “It’s such a rewarding experience to make music at such a high level each weekend with other young artists from all along the Gulf Coast.”

Presented by PNC Bank, “Compelling, Charming, Charismatic – Chee-Yun” will grace the stage on Thursday, May 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the Saenger Theatre. Student and adult tickets can be purchased through the Mobile Symphony Box Office at 251-432-2010, at 257 Dauphin Street or online at mobilesymphony.org.
