It's a rare child who doesn't love pizza...and Sarah Wright, Director of Education for the Mobile Symphony Orchestra, has her hopes high that the two "Musical Pizza Parties" she is throwing for young music lovers throughout the Mobile Bay area will fill the Mobile Civic Center Theater to capacity on Wednesday, January 23.

The "Musical Pizza Party," part of the MSO's Young People's Concert Series, will present two performances for students and their teachers: at 9:15 a.m. and, again, at 10:45 a.m. Scott Speck, Music Director of the Mobile Symphony, will conduct both concerts, which are programmed especially for students from Kindergarten through Middle School.

"The children will learn that, sometimes, music can bear a striking resemblance to a pizza," says Wright. "You start with a plain cheese pizza theme and, then, begin to add lots of yummy topping variations. There is a musical pizza to everyone's liking."

During the 55-minute concerts, the orchestra will introduce its young audience to an array of works from the classical music repertoire. These include: Aaron Copland's Variations on a Shaker Melody, movement 2, Brahms' Variations on a Theme by Haydn, and Tchaikovsky's Suite No. 3, Finale Theme and Variations, and Haydn's Surprise Symphony.

"What won't be a surprise is that everyone will have a great time," says Speck. "The kids will learn a lot about the instruments of the orchestra and classical music. But, most importantly, they'll learn that attending live performances of great music is an experience to anticipate - and savor - every bit as much as a pizza party with friends."

The Mobile Symphony Orchestra is able to present a "Musical Pizza Party," thanks to the generosity of the Josephine Larkins Foundation. The Mobile Civic Center Theater is located at 401 Civic Center Drive in Mobile.
