When Mobile Symphony says it wants to change lives through music, it
really means it. In January 2009 at the annual Mobile Symphony Young
People's Concert, every student and teacher that attended - all 4,000 of
them - received a "Go For The Arts" pass that could be exchanged for
free tickets to Mobile Symphony, Mobile Opera, and Mobile Ballet. The
three arts organizations agreed that any student that tried all three -
opera, ballet, and symphony - could win a season subscription for the
whole family to the art form of his or her choice!
At the season opener, three lucky guys and their families were welcomed
to Mobile Symphony's Sunday afternoon concert. While the families
settled into their seats, students Michael Hornsby, Ted Hamacher, and
Nate Strum went backstage to meet conductor Scott Speck who
congratulated them and asked which art for they liked the most. Speck,
who is co-author of Classical Music, Opera, and Ballet for Dummies, was
genuinely thrilled that the students liked all three and had a hard time
choosing the "best" one!
Before returning to their seats, Michael, Ted, and Nate met violinist
Enen Yu, Mobile Symphony's co-concertmaster and Mobile Opera's
concertmaster, who was warming up in her dressing room prior to her solo
performance in Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade. A view from the wings
gave them a behind-the-scenes look at the symphony concert as it began
to take the stage.
Parents and students agreed that they might have never attended a
symphony, opera, or ballet without the "challenge" offered by Mobile
Symphony's Go For the Arts Pass. Now they are unanimous in saying that
had fun, experienced something new, and developed a new love for the arts.
