Building a Bright Future for the Performing Arts
Mobile Symphony and Mobile Opera are housed in the Larkins Music Center
at 257 Dauphin Street, a historic building faithfully redesigned by
architect Don Bowden.
"Through collaboration, the symphony and opera are now able to better
serve the community's musical needs," says Celia Mann Baehr, Chair of
Mobile Symphony's Board of Directors. This building houses a rehearsal
hall, practice rooms and administrative office space for the opera and
symphony. The rehearsal hall is utilized by the Mobile Symphony Youth
Orchestra and the Bay Area Strings, and doubles as a performance space
for smaller productions. The seven practice rooms are used as private
teaching studios. Because this building connects to the lobby of the
Saenger Theatre, it doubles as a social room for parties or
post-concert greetings with visiting guest artists. Please help this
project remain debt-free. Cost of the building is approximately $1.4
million. To date, $1.0 million dollars in cash and pledges has been
given to the opera and symphony for this project, including leadership
gifts from the Moorer, Hearin-Chandler and Bedsole Foundations and the
Josephine M. Larkins Foundation. Naming opportunities are still
available for the Pocket Park, The Mobile Symphony office suite, the
Park Terrace and others.
