Richard Jernigan is a clarinetist with the Mobile Symphony Orchestra, he also currently plays with the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra, and has previously served as principal clarinet in the Gulf Coast Symphony Orchestra (Biloxi, Mississippi), and the Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra (Niceville, Florida).
A native of Pensacola, Richard holds degrees from Pensacola Junior College and the University of West Florida, where he studied with Dr. Joyce Sidorfsky and Dr. Eugene Gonzalez. Richard did graduate work at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, and holds a master's degree from Louisiana State University, where he was a student of J. David Harris. In the summers of 2002 and 2004, Richard attended the Belgian Clarinet Academy in Oostende, Belgium, and also studied at Hope University, Liverpool, England in 2006.
Currently a Professor at Pensacola Junior College, Richard teaches woodwind performance and classes in music theory and history. In 2006, Richard was inducted into PJC's Academy of Teaching Excellence. Besides teaching, he has conducted some of the Music and Theatre departments light opera and musical theatre productions including Gilbert and Sullivan's Patience and The Mikado, Cole Porter's Anything Goes, and Sandy Wilson's The Boyfriend. Richard has also served as choir director at First Christian Church since 1993.
When not practicing or teaching, Richard might be found sailing on Pensacola Bay, or trail riding with his chestnut mare, Bitsy. |
