A professional musician for nearly 30 years, Keith Bohnet is presently very active in two Mobile, Alabama entities – Mobile Symphony and the University of South Alabama. If you add to that an active fascination with winter snow sports, nature and travel, you will find that the life of this Alabama musician is very fulfilling and enjoyable.
Mr. Bohnet is presently Principal Trombonist with the Mobile Symphony and has filled that position since the Fall of 1988 when the orchestra was then known as the Port City Symphony. Though active in other orchestras, bands and brass quintets through the years, it is performances with Mobile Symphony that keep him striving to improve by actively engaging in daily practice and seeking even more instruction in seminars and masterclasses. Such preparation has become extremely necessary with the increased demands of the repertoire of the orchestra, especially since the arrival of Maestro Scott Speck. Concerts with Mobile Symphony have become for him the ultimate challenge and a precious joy.
Of course every musician knows that it is rare when performing gigs puts food on the table! Happily though, Mr. Bohnet is able to pay the bills through the means of satisfying positions with the Department of Music at the University of South Alabama. Whether he finds himself in the classroom with first-time music students in Introduction to Music or engaged in complex music discourse with music majors and teaching colleagues, there is never a dull moment once these conversations begin. In addition, Keith Bohnet is the Events Coordinator for USA’s Music Department, keeping the calendar of performances straight right along with making sure that each concert is run smoothly from the perspective of both audience and performers.
When not engaged in musical activities, it’s sports, travel and nature that take center stage in Mr. Bohnet’s life. Skiing and snow boarding are the winter favorites for this trombonist and euphoniumist, while hiking and kayaking share equal billing with yard work during the more temperate months (which is all the time in the South!).
In his past lives, Keith Bohnet has been a high school band director, orchestra librarian, radio announcer and even a high school sports official. He hopes to discover even more new opportunities in the second half of his life! |
