Julie Marks, assistant principal Print
Viola

Information: Julie Marks, an MSO violist, served as principal of the section from 1997 through the 2004-05 season. She is currently also playing in Mobile Opera, Pensacola Symphony, and Pensacola Opera. She was formerly principal viola in The Gulf Coast Symphony. Besides performing, Julie is currently chairman of the musicians' committee and is on Mobile Symphony board of directors. An avid chamber musician, Julie met her husband John playing string quartets. For the past 20 years they have been participants at the Chamber Music Conference and Composers' Forum of the East at Bennington College in Vermont. While there, and at other seminars, Julie has been coached by members of the Manhattan, Tokyo, Cleveland, and Fine Arts quartets, among others. Julie's most influential teacher was David Dawson at Indiana University School of Music in the 1970's. While there she attended master classes by Janos Starker, Menachem Pressler, and William Primrose. However, her degrees are not in music, but in psychology (B.A., University of Lousiville) and physiology (M.S., Indiana University). After several years teaching and doing research on the auditory and visual systems in bats, Julie changed directions in the 1980's and became active in many musical organizations in Indianapolis IN where she lived before moving to Point Clear AL in 1993. For ten years she led The Ensemble Music Society, a presenting organization of internationally known chamber music artists. She also served as president of Young Audiences of Indiana, and on the boards of the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis and the Aspen Scholarship Fund of Indiana.
