Information: Originally from Mexico City, José Sunderland has been living in the United States since 1992. He began his musical education at the age of 21, studying music at the Escuela Superior de Musica in Mexico City for seven years before coming to the United States on a scholarship to complete a degree in music performance at the University of Southern Mississippi. While in Mexico, he performed with the Dumka String Quartet for four years. In addition to playing at many venues in Mexico City, Mr. Sunderland and his quartet were awarded first place in the Mexican National String Competition in 1990. Since moving to the United States, he has played with a number of ensembles. In addition to playing with the Mobile Symphony and Mobile Opera Orchestras, he has played with the Pensacola Symphony and Pensacola Opera Orchestras, the Meridian Symphony, the Mississippi Symphony, and the Gulf Coast Symphony. Mr. Sunderland also enjoys teaching. He has more than nine years of experience teaching private lessons and eight years of experience directing middle school and high school orchestras and teaching violin, viola, cello, and bass to students in elementary, middle and high school programs. He has recently relocated from Gulfport, Mississippi to the Mobile area and is building a private studio.
