Elizabeth French was born into a musical family and started violin in a public school setting. Proceeding through school, college, and graduate school, she became concertmaster of the University of Tennessee orchestra, the Sewanee Summer Music Center orchestra, the University of Mississippi orchestra, and later the Knoxville Symphony Summer Chamber orchestra. She has played in the 1st violin sections of the Knoxville, Birmingham, and Memphis symphony orchestras, and later the Gulf Coast, Meridian, Pensacola, and of course the
Mobile Symphony. She has been a recitalist in the Alabama area under various sponsorships.
Earning 2 degrees in music and a Ph.D. in biology, her daytime teaching career has had a "sandwich" aspect to it, starting with music teaching, followed by 35 years in biology at the University of Mobile, and now, retired from that post as Professor Emeritus of Biology, she once again is teaching private violin lessons. But the common thread continuing through all of these years is the night time and weekend work in the orchestras and ensembles.
She writes: "With each new year in the Mobile Symphony, there is always something else to learn, even though I have played most of these pieces before. Scott gives us new ideas and fresh interpretations, and utilizes every drop of music that we have within us."
Dr. French's non-orchestra hobbies and activities include camping, hiking, bird study, nature, photography, music club, church, travel, and working around the house. You will never find her inactive. |
