French Horn

Information: In addition to the Mobile Symphony, Carrie Strickland is currently Third Horn with the Sinfonia Gulf Coast and Third/Associate Principal Horn with The Philharmonic Society of Northwest Florida. Active in solo and chamber competitions, she has been a finalist in the Farkas Competition with the International Horn Society as well as a participant in the Fischoff International Chamber Music Competition and the American Horn Competition. She has judged competitions and performed at regional horn workshops in Georgia, Louisiana, and Iowa, performed at international horn workshops in Canada and Russia, as well as performed as a soloist and recitalist throughout the U. S. and Europe. Most recently, she was one of four soloists with The Philharmonic Society of Northwest Florida for a series of three performances of the Konzertstucke for four horns by Robert Schumann. Dr. Strickland completed her Bachelor of Music at the University of Southern Mississippi, Master of Music at West Virginia University, and the Doctorate of Musical Arts at the University of Georgia. From 1997-1998, she completed independent study at the Norwegian State Academy of Music in Oslo, Norway where she studied with Froydis Ree Wekre. In 2003, Dr. Strickland was awarded a Fulbright Grant and returned to Norway to complete her dissertation A Performance Guide for Wolfgang Plagge’s Music for Horn. Currently, Dr. Strickland is on faculty at Jones County Junior College in Mississippi. She has held faculty positions at Pearl River Community College, Toccoa Falls College, Augusta State University, and was an instructor at the University of Georgia.
