Description: The MSO Classics kick off with the “Stars of the Joffrey Ballet” in an unforgettable combination of music and dance infused with power, movement and explosive chemistry. Six of the finest dancers from the Joffrey Ballet will join the musicians as they perform Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake” and “Sleeping Beauty”, as well as pieces by Goldenthal, Richard Rodgers and Arvo Part.

These “Ladies of Motown” will blend the harmonies of the Supremes, the Pointer Sisters, Donna Summer and other female Motown greats that captured our hearts in the 60s and 70s.

Description: Blue jeans are the costume de riguer for this popular classic, featuring the triumphant return and brilliant sounds of violinist Chee Yun. Engaging Chee Yun’s full range of passion and energy, the MSO will perform the Violin Concerto by Sibelius, plus Beethoven’s symphonic salute to Napoleon, the Eroica Symphony. The concert will begin with Steve Reich’s “Clapping Music” performed by clapping hands only.

Description: Featuring pianists Per Tengstrand and Shan Shan Sun, the Mobile Symphony will present Saint-Saens’ zoological fantasy “Carnival of the Animals,” a magical and musical journey through the land of four-legged creatures. The MSO’s beloved concertmaster and co-concertmaster, Jenny Gregoire and Enen Yu, will perform Bach’s Double Violin Concerto, while several members of the orchestra will have their own moments to shine in solo performances when the orchestra takes on Stravinsky’s “Pulcinella Suite”.

Description: The first of a multi-year project focusing on America’s best composers, this performance will feature the music of George Gershwin under the direction of conductor John Morris Russell. Joining the orchestra will be brilliant young British pianist Benjamin Grosvenor performing two highly contrasting and yet highly complementary piano concertos: the Ravel Piano Concerto in G, and Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.”

Description: Featuring Jens Lindemann, one of the world’s best trumpet soloists, Trumpet Spectacular will include the beloved concerto for trumpet and orchestra, Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto. Wrapping this concert entirely around the trumpet, the orchestra will also perform Williams’ famous “Olympic Fanfare and Theme”, written for the 1984 Olympics and featuring six separate trumpet parts. Trumpet Spectacular will end on an especially high note with Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 and its spectacular trumpet-solo opening and bold and brassy climax.

Description: The sounds of this season-ending MSO Classic will fill the concert hall with one of the largest orchestras ever assembled on the Saenger Theatre stage combined with a choir directed by Laura Moore. The performance will include Prokofiev’s “Alexander Nevsky” and Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.
